Now available on UK Blu-ray is the 1992 thriller, Single White Female. Starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the movie is a classic of the genre and gets a 'four star' review from me.#Movies #Films #FilmCritic #Writerhttps://lnkd.in/dFiNTwca

Film : Beautiful BoySubjective feedback by Vishvajeet : Since the film is about a young teenager getting addicted to drugs and no matter how hard he tries, he just can't overcome the addiction. The director takes a sensible approach to the topic and tries and handles it with care, we see Nic going through the phase over and over again and how meth is affecting him on a neurological level, and his father who won't back down and won't hurt him in the process either, to keep trying to reach till his boy recovers...he does.Technical Analysis by Vishvajeet : Timothee Chalamet is so versatile, this young protege can do anything and he does it with so much heart, care and honesty. You can actually feel the stupidity of Nic's character and addiction. Steve Carell as always plays certain characters outside of the comic genre so well, you would like him to have raised you. His portryal of the never give up and caring father is so well done that you feel maybe he himself is like that in real life. Review by Christy Lemire (Roger Ebert) : "But there’s a gauzy detachment in Van Groeningen’s approach that keeps it from achieving the kind emotional wallop it seemingly intended. It’s almost too pretty in a self-consciously artful way, and that overriding aesthetic suffocates the underlying truth of the lead actors’ performances""woefully wastes its strong women""But too often, the film relies on painfully on-the-nose song choices to punctuate a scene or express what its characters are feeling".#educationalcontent #cinema #review #feedback #timotheechalamet #beautifulboy

2024 and Writer, Producer, and Director, Roger Corman turned 98 in April of this year and died in May. Few people live long enough to outlive their copyrights and see their movies go to Public Domain, but Roger did.Roger Corman's life story melds with influential Horror Writers like Richard Matheson and evergreen Horror movie icons like Vincent Price. What's more, because of his near complete Poe cycle, his cinema story is part of the posthumous works that are the legacy of Edgar Allen. However, the main of Edgar's stories are little more than bite-sized. The Secret to Sustaining Suspense With Minimal Lighting in 'Out of Darkness'https://ift.tt/SX1gBZoIn the mood for a prehistoric genre thriller set 45,000 years ago but don't know where to find one? Fear not, for now we have a wonderfully crafted one in the wonderful gift that is Out of Darkness. Out of Darkness stands out for a lot of reasons, but one of which is the very minimal, very effect story. Director Andrew Cumming doesn't shy away from brutality and fear, but he does so in a way to make it count. It's a wonderful bottle of a film with expertly executed suspense shamelessly inspired by Ridley Scott's Alien. No Film School was lucky enough to chat with Andrew, where he discusses building suspense with minimalism, predominantly using fire as a practical light source, and how to create an Aurora Borealis Sequence. The following quotes are edited for clarity and readabilityThe Art of Minimalism to Build Suspense"So with the monster, I kind of have to hold back [like in] Alien. It's funny, I was just saying this before. I love Alien. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Out of Darkness and Alien share a very common story structure, and we're very unashamed about that. That movie is so perfect. The only time it slightly falls apart for me is when Yaffet Kotto and Veronica Cartwright are being held, and [it cuts to a] wide shot and we see the alien full length. It's [very clearly] a guy in a suit. It's fine because it's HR Geiger and looks phenomenal, but it is a guy in a suit, and it slightly takes you away from that mystery. So it was all about how the tension comes from how long can we keep that mystery going about what this thing is where it is, how fast is it, how strong is it, how many are there? Once you've committed to the the challenge of holding this thing back for as long as possible until you just can't anymore. Then that's partly in the cut. It's partly about, right, okay, we'll take frames out there. We'll slightly ramp the speed up on this part where [the monster] crosses, because you don't want people to get too much of a glimpse, and then it's that old truth about the things that you make up in your head are far more potent than the things you see. And that's when you lean on a great sound designer like Paul Davies. He wanted to mix the film in Dolby Atmos, and that gives you so many tools in terms of where these sounds are coming from and how you spread the journey of this creature around the space, around the campfire. So it's a much more subjective experience. Yeah, I mean, it's funny because at the time as well, we were shooting in Scotland and the schedule was really tight, and at the end of every day I didn't always have time to get POV shots. And then we got into the edit and turned to my producer and I was like, we really need some POV shots because we just didn't have them. So we had some money left in the budget, and we went and did a few pickup days just to get a few thing...

How Alfred Hitchco*ck Manipulates His Audience – My takeaways from the video essay by “The Discarded Image”.Hitchco*ck introduced elements or characters that seemed significant but were ultimately distractions from the true plot twists and revelations. In “Psycho” he introduced several secondary characters – For instance: Marion’s sister Lila Loomi and a private investigator. This helped to keep the viewers on edge, allowing them to play the mental guessing game constantly. Changing POVs: Throughout the movie: Hitchco*ck gives us a glimpse of what situations would look like from a different perspective. This technique allowed viewers to experience events from the character's viewpoint, intensifying their emotional connection and making them more empathetic to the characters' plight. In Psycho, the POV shifts between Marion and Norman, and hence the empathy meter keeps shifting between the two. Shocking Scenes: Before the Shower Scene in Psycho, no one ever knew what it was to see a woman’s naked body on screen. Hitchco*ck’s juxtaposition of a female bathing scene with a brutal murder scene shook the American audience. He made the most unusual connections of that time – from having a mother, to sex and murder. Composition: Once Hitchco*ck introduced a new composition, he didn’t get back to the older one. In Psycho, The dialogue between Marion and Norman is a masterpiece on who controls the narrative, their respective bodies moving forward to establish dominance, or Norman filling up the same frame when Marion is shown moving out of the room.#movies #films #fiction #storytelling

The Story (Part 16, beginning is in the previous posts, but starting from here is ok :). Through Challenge Alone. As many will know, the person in the picture is John McClane. Played by Bruce Willis, McClane is a “usual” guy who reluctantly happens to fight groups of bad guys in a sequence of the “Die Hard” films. Most of the time he acts alone. McClane doesn’t know, but when he is surrounded by sinister evildoers or crawls through dark and scary places, we – the viewers – are there with him. McClane has our compassion, our emotional support, our inner certainty that a story like that should end well, despite some thrill for maybe it won’t. Children in a theater express that by shouting to warn the protagonist of the hiding danger (a wolf, for example). By the way, do you feel like doing that too sometimes? There are many other movie characters that have to act or live through their life situations alone. So do we. There is such a variety of challenges and life situations that we are not able to delegate or share. Making own decisions is a big part of that. So, maybe you are marching toward a decisive job interview, or have just happened to fail a pitch. Maybe you need to make a difficult decision. Maybe you deal with emotions coming from the past. That in fact is an essential part of decision making.Try thinking of yourself as a movie character. Just for a moment. It can be a specific persona you like, one who happened to be in a similar situation. But that is not even too necessary. You can just imagine that right now it is actually you in a film and your life is that story. If you think you are not that good looking to be in a movie, let me tell you this: when you work on decisions and act upon them, you look great! (Exception: one who plans evil in real life, will have an ugly grimace). So, you are staring through the raindrops on a bus window, or walking in a street, or standing in front of the mirror, overwhelmed. Take an outside look at yourself. What kind of music could play in this moment of the film? Do you look sad, angry, confused? You have the right to be here. Maybe you are already confident and know your plan: there is this moment when the eyes focus with sudden clarity of determination and will. So, forget that mundane dude, that doesn't deserve you. He'll regret it and cry. And you will meet your perfect guy in the next episode. You find it silly when you try? Great! So maybe you have just smiled! And… “Yippee-ki-yay!..”___The Story will continue in the next post
