and i'm gia vang working to shift the narrative and share love for the city by the bay. there's been a lot of talk about san francisco's so-called doom loop. yeah. so today, a new event aimed at change that conversation and support small businesses leading the charge. one of the city's former mayors. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. three, two. one former san francisco mayor willie brown led the way, cutting a ribbon to reject the so-called doom loop narrative about the city. it means that we are challenging everything people say negative about san francisco. a section of larkin street was full of stages and artists today, shining a positive light in the tenderloin. tenderloin gets love fest, and we're bringing the love to all these small businesses here today. adam swi, with the nonprofit value culture, co-produced the event along with the tenderloin merchants association. this doom loops alleged the pandemic was awful. it affected all of us. the problems in san francisco that we have kind of existed

before that here in the tenderloin. they're not new and today is just an example of where we could move forward. encampment sweeps continue in the city, which is also pushed to dismantle drug markets. some say more businesses are coming in resources for the unhoused. and so cleaning resources, and it has got even end up amped up. i think that any attempt to bring positive energy and positive traffic, positive attention to the neighborhood is a win. business owners say the effort today to change the narrative and bring people out to support them is important. i just think that people don't come to the tenderloin because, they see it as not clean and they see it as not safe. and so when we have events like this, of course, there's a cleanup effort. and you know, there's a safety effort. and in these kind of confined areas, but go ahead and walk a couple of blocks in any other direction. and it's just not that justin bautista runs the clothing store tilted brim, and says he would like to

6:33 pm

see this kind of effort amplified throughout the neighborhood. it's great to have these events here. i think they're helping to revitalize the area. you know, as everyone knows, this area has been quite impacted, especially since the pandemic. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. new tonight a child is recovering after a house fire in east san jose. it started just before three this afternoon on clyde drive near dobson avenue. that's right off 680 pictures just sent in to our newsroom right here showing the extent of the damage. firefighters say the home was destroyed. flames also spread to a neighbor's fence and backyard shed, but crews were able to put it out before it reached their home. a power pole also damaged, leaving nearly two dozen nearby homes in the dark who say they will be working overnight to restore power. we now know the name of the teenager killed in a suspected dui crash in walnut creek. the coroner says 18 year old sanaya benga, from pittsburgh, died in that crash happened about 1:00 thursday

6:35 pm

requirements. so it's, you know, it's a lot of a lot of physical activity. so obviously the heat does impact, our performance and it does impact how we perform. i hope they pass their test. pg&e says crews are still trying to figure out what caused the outage. the utility hopes to have power restored to all customers within the next hour or so. another weekend, another rally against the war in gaza in san francisco, hundreds of protesters rallied and marched for an immediate ceasefire, demanding an end to u.s. support for israel. demonstrations started at 16th and mission bart plaza. it's been an especially turbulent week across the middle east. protesters say it's time to end the violence before it spreads into an even larger conflict. israel has escalated in multiple countries with political assassinations of chief negotiators, with bombing of civilians and of course, the ongoing mass murder that we're seeing in gaza. we need the united states to immediately issue an arms embargo on israel

mayor larry klein came out on top. the winners were set to take on the reigning champ, san jose mayor matt mahan, and the championship tomorrow. but a former city council member stepping up to replace mehan in his absence. all right. well, that looks like some grape stomping fun. good exercise. right? rob is here. i saw that they were stomping grapes under the shade, though. it did warm up today. yeah. you know, this time yesterday we had showers and rainbows around the bay area. it was a nice reprieve from the heat, but the heat making a bit of a comeback here on your saturday afternoon as we'll take you around the bay area right now san jose blue skies. look what's missing. they're not seeing as much of smoke or haze in the air. we'll have a look at your air quality forecast to wrap up the weekend in a moment, but today's highs did bounce back up. look at that. concord and livermore today, 199 degrees respectively. back above average once again to start the weekend. san jose not too bad. 80s right now under those clear skies in san jose. still hanging on to the 90s

6:50 pm

around the tri valley. beautiful view there of mostly clear skies. looking off to the east towards livermore, but still 96 degrees in walnut creek. so t-shirt and shorts weather for you this evening. if you're going to head out to broadway plaza and back over to san francisco. need a jacket? temperatures in the low 60s thanks to the onshore wind, which is keeping things cool around the inner bay, but not as much inland today. but that wind direction is helping us out when it comes to air quality. all in the good range again tomorrow and any areas of low level haze and smoke likely staying off to the east due to those onshore winds. we'll see. also bringing in the low clouds and spotty drizzle for the morning. so sunday morning begins off at the cloudy skies, temperatures in the 50s. then as you move forward from lunchtime into the afternoon, pretty comfortable. temperatures may drop just a couple degrees inland tomorrow. low to mid 90s for those inland. east bay valleys down towards morgan hill. upper 60s around san francisco and 70s into oakland. next three days, monday through midweek, shows that inland areas will start to warm

6:51 pm

up again. right now, tuesday looks to be the hottest day of the week, with upper 90s to about 100 degree temperatures again around the east bay valleys. we'll have to see if we get a one day heat advisory for those temperatures. morgan hill to look at that on tuesday. close to 100 degrees 70s and 80s bayside. then by wednesday, temperatures start to come down a little bit. i think they'll come down even more for the second half of the week. using morgan hill as the guide here. look how we go from those mid 90s around wednesday down into the 80s as we head towards next weekend. so san francisco for a time this week. we'll see temperatures climbing to the mid 70s. looks like tuesday will be the warmest day both for the bay and our inland valleys. as the numbers march back up again, but not to the levels we saw last month and the good news is, we do get that cooling kicking in for the second half of the week. watching wednesday though, after that heat tuesday and the winds pick up, we'll have to watch some of the inland hills for those dry and breezy conditions around midweek. with the exception of tuesday. are we right around where we should be? yeah, upper 80s to near 90

6:52 pm

shut down part of 80 plus presidential candidates bringing in the big bucks from billionaires. how the mega donations are impacting the race for the white house the state just outlawed hidden fees on things like concert tickets, but we still found them. i'm consumer investigator chris kamara. we'll show you where and how you have new power to hold companies accountable. thanks for joining us for a special edition of nbc bay area news on this saturday. i'm gia vang and i am terry mcsweeney, leading auto safety advocates are now calling for nationwide changes in the wake of reporting from our own investigative unit. has to do with that gruesome spill on 880 couple months back that left mounds of animal parts along all four northbound lanes in oakland. the truck that was transporting the cargo kept going. but our investigative unit recently revealed the

7:00 pm

company responsible. darling ingredients, has a history of leaving behind similar messes throughout the country. while state and federal laws require trucks to safely secure loads, we discovered in many cases there are no specific rules for exactly how to do that. darling ingredients uses tarps to cover their loads, but auto experts with the group advocates for highway and auto safety argue that's clearly not enough to prevent this kind of cargo from spilling out of these large trucks. lives are at stake here. when any type of product, especially a very slippery one, flies off of a truck, it can cause tremendous havoc on the roadways and kill people. luckily, no one was killed in the last few crashes of this type, but that doesn't mean that they won't in the future. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban has been looking into all of this for us and bigad, what exactly are advocates wanting to do about this? well, terry, at the top of their list is some kind of regulatory change. they argue that simply putting a tarp

7:01 pm

on an over top truck, open top truck rather is not enough. and so they're asking the u.s. department of transportation, specifically the branch that oversees safety when it comes to commercial vehicles. they're asking that branch to come up with some kind of regulatory change, in essence, to require companies to do more to secure this kind of cargo that goes beyond just putting a tarp over it. terry, i know that you talked to darling ingredients. what what are they saying about this whole mess? well, as you might imagine, we had a lot of questions about darling ingredients, their safety record, their containment practices. the company, however, never got back to us. but we have covered this story for a number of weeks now. and so in a previous statement, the company did tell us that it regrets what happened in oakland and that it is cooperating, terry, with relevant authorities. if nothing changes, if this continues to happen, it is just so gross to think about what are the concerns i mean, really at the top of the list, terry, is safety. when you think about what happened in oakland back in may, there were four accidents that happened as a result of

7:02 pm

this spill. fortunately, no one was seriously injured. but again, not to get too gross here. this kind of cargo makes for a really treacherous roadway for drivers. they can lose control at the wheel. so actually coming up tonight at 1130 after our olympics coverage, you're going to hear from one of the first drivers to make it through that mess. we're going to tell you what he saw, and we're going to show you what his dash cam happened to capture. it's one of those things you won't see or you won't believe rather, until you see it. all right. bigad, thanks very much, gio. all right. bigad wait. i'm going to wait to see that. okay. dozens of people in san francisco today rallying this morning supporting the venezuela's opposition candidate, recognizing him as the official winner of the presidential election. the country held a controversial presidential election last sunday. both incumbent president nicolas maduro and opposition leader edmundo gonzalez erika claimed victory, but tally sheets from voting locations, so gonzalez yuridia was the clear

7:03 pm

winner, winning 66% of the vote compared to maduro's 31%. demonstrators think the united states for being among the countries recognizing what they call the true winner. everybody wants a maduro out of the regime of the government because it is not good for the venezuelan people. venezuela do want change, do want change. maduro in a peaceful way. so that's why we, we, we would like to and we need the international community to, to recognize edmundo gonzalez's, win. venezuela's electoral body is loyal to maduro's regime. it says maduro was reelected to a third term after winning 51% of the vote. take a live look at the white house as anticipation builds for vice president kamala harris to pick a running mate for her presidential bid, six contenders have met with harris's campaign as possible vp picks. they are kentucky governor andy beshear, transportation secretary pete

buttigieg, senator mark kelly of arizona, illinois governor j.b. pritzker, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro and minnesota governor tim walz. now, the announcement is expected before tuesday, when harris is set to appear with that running mate for the first time in philadelphia. now, campaign officials have released final fundraising tallies for july. the harris camp says it raised $310 million last month, entered august with 377 million on hand for the first week of her campaign after president joe biden bowed out of the race, raised 200 million. former president trump's team says it raised 139 million in july. entered august with $327 million to spend this year's election involves an unthinkable amount of money for both presidential candidates and a majority of that money is coming from wealthy donors. nbc's yasmin vossoughian has more on the battle of the billionaires that's brewing right now. right now, many roads for the 2024

election cycle seem to be leading back to the ultra wealthy, far away from washington. and you know, elon, i love elon musk. do we love him i love him. politicians from both sides of the aisle courting the mega rich, trying to get them to dump big bucks into their campaigns. billionaires like nelson peltz, who once denounced former president trump over the attack on the capitol on january sixth. i voted for him today. i'm i'm sorry i did that. we need to heal from trump. it was really a devastating blow. now saying he'll vote for trump again. and he's not the only one turning around his support. there's also venture capitalist doug leone, former paypal exec david sachs and real estate tycoon robert bigelow, who even gave $1 million of his own cash to help cover trump's legal fees. but the big question is why? what do these billionaire businessmen have to gain? this has turned into this just sort of steady drumbeat of big money. going back to trump. trump has been

7:06 pm

saying, what? they want to hear that he's talking about cutting the corporate tax rate again. he's talking about saving them money, long term. in some cases, they're reportedly helping sway some huge decisions. billionaire republican megadonor peter thiel, who told the atlantic that trump administration was, quote, crazier and, quote, more dangerous than he thought back in november. and it's time to rebuild america, warmed back up to the former president, according to the new york times. and according to the washington post, thiel worked hard behind the scenes with elon musk to convince the trump campaign to put jd vance, who used to work for thiel, on the ticket. nbc news reached out to these big republican donors for comment, but has not immediately heard back. and it's not just republicans trying to cozy up to these mega donors. kamala harris rapidly fortifying her own strength amongst wealthy democrat donors as many open their wallets back up. now that president joe biden is off the ticket. just last week, billionaire heiress abigail disney turned back on the tap

7:07 pm

after refusing to donate another dollar if biden stayed in the race. reid hoffman, the co-founder of linkedin and venture capitalist ron conway, also working the phones to corral support for harris, now on track to raise $100 million. the case we're hearing for the vice president to come and support her over trump is like this. she's willing to have conversations with ceos. well, biden didn't always want to have those types of conversations. he had intermediaries who would have those talks for him. the money crucial to dominating the airwaves for both sides since, you know, harris rose to the top of the ticket, there has been you know, over $100 million put into future ad reservations in the coming weeks. and months, both in support for harris and against harris by trump and his allied political action committees. that's the tell of where we're going to see a lot of this money showing the importance, the influence and power these big money donors yield. with less than 100 days until the election. that was

contained. the cal fire warns that hot and dry weather could test their progress. one ranch was spared. cal fire posted pictures of animals back home at big dunes ranch. firefighters say the owners cleared out brush around the property, creating a defensible space that kept the ranch safe from flames. those frustrating hidden fees are supposed to be a thing of the past here in california, and yet here we are, still talking about them. brand new state law requires concert and event ticket sellers, as well as others to disclose your full price up front. but we found companies breaking the law. here's consumer investigator chris chmura. brie eaton tracee corporation, that is san jose's lyric theater company, opening its summer festival with fiddler on the roof. that tradition won cheers. another theater tradition earns jeers ticket fees. most organizations i know

7:10 pm

really don't like imposing fees. they're a necessary evil. recently, the curtain dropped on hiding. infamous order service and convenience fees. a new state law requires all businesses, especially ticket sellers, to now disclose your full price up front. no more hidden fees. there's no reason for hidden fees other than to lure in potential customers with prices that are simply not true. the new law kicked in july 1st, so our ticket sellers still hiding fees. we just spot checked more than 25 bay area venues and found some drama. we followed the public process of purchasing tickets for recent events, knowing the new state law says there should be no price surprises hit into the gap, so we'll be fined well. many popular ticket sellers like the giants, shoreline amphitheater and concord

7:11 pm

pavilion are disclosing all fees up front, but several others were not. for example, look at these tickets to stanford's popular frost amphitheater. its website advertised 40 bucks for a lawn seat to enjoy a summer quintet. but at checkout, a $12 online processing fee suddenly appeared. now, our $40 seat is 52 bucks. the attorney general's office told us. that kind of price advertising is not compliant with the new state law. we saw similar fees tacked on to the end of ticket purchases at places like symphony san jose, california, theater in san jose, san francisco's midway venue, the oakland ballers, and. lyric theater at checkout. its website was tacking on a $2 fee to see fiddler, its upcoming cole porter concert, and the comedic musical red mill. so we contacted lyric. i was completely unaware of it until you brought it up to me. and, we

7:12 pm

strive to be compliant and straightforward and make sure that everybody knows what they're getting. box office manager chris frey says he immediately looked into the law. when i first read it, i thought, oh my gosh, i've got to change my entire pricing structure, which, no, i don't really need to do that. i can just change the wording and make it transparent and make sure people know exactly how much they're going to pay from beginning to end. and he did. the company now discloses the $2 fee up front. kris even made a special sign for the first fiddler performance. we are now, thankfully compliant, but no price surprises. a new tradition for this ensemble worthy of ovation. what about the other places we mentioned? well, we contacted them all and showed them the hidden fees we found stanford live just updated its ticketing so you can see your

7:13 pm

full price up front. the oakland ballers updated their website the other day. san francisco's midway venue did not respond to us, but its website did change. california theater in san jose said, we are in communication with our clients to make sure that they are aware of the law change and that they address all compliance needs in their ticketing, symphony san jose said. we are actively working with our ticketing platform to ensure the fees are displayed correctly, in compliance with the law. if venues and promoters don't start disclosing fees upfront, don't expect a big law enforcement crackdown. the law wasn't written for that kind of accountability. instead, it's up to you. the new law gives ticket buyers who find hidden fees a green light to sue the ticket seller for at least $1,000, plus attorney's fees. if you spot hidden fees, you can tell us, though that is no way to pocket a grand sorry. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form

7:17 pm

like residents of the city can enjoy, but like folks who aren't necessarily into the dead or have never experienced it correctly, so to speak, can come and enjoy themselves for free and soak up the sun in a beautiful place. jerry garcia would have turned 82 years old this week. his birthday august 1st. very nice. and as he said, rob, soaking up the sun. i mean, if you're in san francisco, might have been nice. 70. yeah the sun came out. it was gorgeous for that. and we did warm up a little bit this weekend. inland areas, east bay valleys, upper 90s to near 100 degrees. and that's kind of a sneak preview actually, where the 7-day forecast is headed early next week. right now on display. our summer microclimates around the bay area, no low clouds around san francisco, but the sea breeze keeping the temperatures comfortable or chilly. actually close to 60 degrees right now. but as you head inland, walnut creek still hanging on to 93 degrees, we had highs today near 100 earlier today, 89 degrees in dublin and around the tri valley with those blue skies and more

7:18 pm

blue skies near san jose, where it's a more comfortable 78 degrees. now remember yesterday we had showers and rainbow views at this hour 24 hours ago. now that moisture has moved off to the north pretty active day for sierra thunderstorms, but should see less of that tomorrow. if you do have plans around lake tahoe and reno. looks a little less active tomorrow. more that has pushed off to the east closer to the bay area. the story is the low cloud cover, which eventually will reach san francisco and spread locally inland for the morning, with some misty skies, a little bit of drizzle to start the day, temperatures in the 50s and low 60s, and then quickly clearing inland and heating up again. valley temperatures tomorrow, low to mid 90s for inland valleys, 80 again in san jose and for at least tomorrow 60s and 70s for most locations. bayside. now monday, tuesday and wednesday. that will be the second warm up that we see around the bay area. in fact, tuesday could see those highs close to 100 degrees inland again for contra costa county, solano county, even morgan hill near 100 degrees on tuesday, 70s

7:19 pm

and 80s. bayside as we head into looks like tuesday and wednesday. then the second half of the week we'll see temperatures start to cool on down right now, cooling later in the week, but no signs will have any more of the monsoon moisture or summer shower surprises like we had yesterday. most of that should also stay off towards the east. so a bit of a warm up to start the week. san francisco and inland locations. seeing some 70s bayside, 70s and 80s bayside through midweek. and then you see the second half of the week, things start to cool down back into the 80s by this time next weekend. so the heat making a little bit of a comeback, but not sticking around for long. all right, well that's good to hear. that looks so good. yeah. thanks. thanks a lot anthony flores joins us now talking about the niners. but not this year's squad. no certainly a legend patrick willis goes from 49ers legend to football immortality. what it means to the former linebacker linebacking great to be inducted in the pro football hall of fame. stick around. sport

football's most exclusive club, the hall of fame, this morning. patrick willis was inducted into the pro football hall of fame in canton, ohio. he is one of seven inductees in the class of 2024. the 49ers linebacker was selected in the first round of the 2007 nfl draft from ole miss. he earned either first or second team all-pro honors in each of his first six seasons. he was a seven time pro bowler. he retired in 2015 with more than 1200 tackles, 20.5 sacks, and 16 forced fumbles to go along with eight interceptions. if you want to reach the peak in your success, you cannot cheat the grind for the grind knows what you put in. i never give up, never quit on myself. through my example, i hope my story can be a template for you

7:24 pm

about brock. all right. camp continues tomorrow. the niners play their first preseason game next saturday at nashville. all right. the giants taking on the reds in cincinnati, came out swinging. they smacked four home runs, including this one that made it six. nothing. the giants showing some fight late. matt chapman goes yard in the ninth. but the rally falls short. the reds win it 6 to 4 to paris. the u.s. men's basketball team taking on puerto rico. steph curry having trouble finding his shot here. he buries the triple. had a quiet eight points then curry off the miss. no problem lebron james is there with the follow up jam. the u.s. wins big 104 83. the u.s. goes three and zero in pool play. they face brazil tuesday in the quter finals.ar when we're young, we're told anything is possible... ...but only a few of us go out and prove it. witness the greatness of anna hall
